NRIC numbers alone cannot be used to purchase, surrender or alter policies
SINGAPORE, 2 February 2026 – The General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA Singapore) and the Life Insurance Association, Singapore (LIA Singapore) announced today that the insurance industry will phase out the use of NRIC numbers for authentication by 31 December 2026, in line with the Personal Data Protection Commission’s guidelines issued today1.
There are no changes to existing safeguards and NRIC numbers alone cannot be used to purchase, surrender or alter existing policies, submit policy claims, nor change the nominated beneficiary or bank account information lodged with the insurer for receipt of policy payments.
